π Overview
The High School DxD manga is an adaptation of the light novel series of the same name, mixing action, ecchi comedy, and supernatural fantasy in a high school setting. While it follows the anime quite closely in the beginning, it gradually diverges a bit toward the end. However, the differences arenβt drastic, so if youβre coming from the anime, youβll still recognize most of the story.
The main manga series consists of 11 volumes, and while it covers a good chunk of the story, it does not complete the full first season of the anime.
π¨ Art & Style
The art is polished and consistent with the genre β attractive character designs, expressive facial reactions, and plenty of classic fan service poses. If youβre into that, it delivers. The action scenes are solid, though not particularly groundbreaking.
π Story & Pacing
The story centers around Issei Hyoudou, a pervy high schooler who gets a second chance at life as a devil under Rias Gremory after being killed by a fallen angel. It mixes supernatural battles with harem antics, school life, and inner power-ups.
The pacing is fairly balanced. It doesnβt drag, but there were times I found myself not really eager to read the next chapter. The humor is hit-or-miss depending on your personal taste.
π Comedy & Fan Service
This is one of the most defining parts of the series. The comedy is over-the-top and lewd β which is the main appeal for many fans. Personally, I found it funny at times, but it didnβt always land. That inconsistency is a big part of why I rated it lower.
π₯ Characters
The characters are likable if a bit trope-heavy. Isseiβs obsession with breasts is a running gag, but he also gets some solid development as he grows into his role as a devil. Rias, Akeno, Koneko, and the rest of the girls all have their standout moments, especially in battle and emotional arcs.
βοΈ Pros & Cons
β Pros:
- Faithful to the anime/light novel early on
- Great art and character design
- Fun supernatural battles
- Fan service (if thatβs your thing)
β Cons:
- Doesnβt fully adapt the animeβs first season
- Inconsistent comedy
- Some arcs lack strong emotional or plot depth
π― Final Thoughts
I gave High School DxD manga a 7 out of 10.
Itβs a fun read with good artwork and some hilarious moments, but I found myself putting it down more often than not. This could be due to my own sense of humor and what I look for in a story. Still, for fans of the anime or those who enjoy ecchi comedy with action, itβs worth checking out β just donβt expect it to blow your mind.
