Belle Showcase

Belle* is an anime movie inspired by Beauty and the Beast, directed by Mamoru Hosoda (not Studio Ghibli, but it has a similar style). It was released in 2021.

The main character’s name is Suzu (not Sophie — it’s a common mix-up). When she was young, her mother died while trying to save another child from drowning. Although the child survived, Suzu was deeply traumatized by the loss. After that, she became distant from others and stopped singing — something she once loved.

Later, Suzu discovers a massive virtual world called U, where she creates an avatar named Belle. Once inside, she starts singing again — this time anonymously — and quickly rises to fame as one of the platform’s top virtual singers.

During one of her performances, a mysterious figure known as The Beast crashes the stage, chased by police in superhero-like costumes. Instead of fearing him, Belle becomes curious. With the help of her friends, she sets out to discover who the Beast truly is beneath his monstrous appearance.

My Thoughts

To me, Belle feels like a modern take on Beauty and the Beast, but with a virtual twist. This was my second time watching it, and it still holds up.

The world of U reminds me a lot of VRChat — a space where people can hide behind avatars but still express real emotions. The story is emotional and unique, and it doesn’t end like your typical Disney movie, which I always appreciate. The animation is also top-notch.
